I was born in New Zealand but have lived more of my life in Britain, four years in Bristol and thirty-eight in London. After graduation from the University of Canterbury, and a brief time on the Christchurch Star newspaper, I came to London with my husband. I was fortunate to work with the New Zealand Press Association before having my first child. We returned to New Zealand in 1974 and after a second child I returned to full-time work as an editor and marketing officer for Whitcoulls Publishing in Christchurch. My husband, a paediatrician, accepted a research and clinical job in Bristol in 1981 and we returned to England to settle here. In 1990, after some years as a freelancer in the publishing industry, I accepted a full-time job with Routledge, the academic publisher. I became their first textbook development editor in 1995 and remained in the job until retirement in 2011. Sailors, Settlers & Sinners is my first book, though I have contributed a chapter,'A View from Inside' to Instead of Fullstops, edited by Susan Sellers.
