The author was a Harvard Law School graduate who crossed the Atlantic to enlist in the French Foreign Legion on 13 April 1917. Subsequently, he soon transferred to the French aviation service and after training at Avord, Pau and Le Plessis-Belleville, was posted to a fighter squadron at the Front.
In January 1918, Biddle transferred to the United States Signal Corps, Aviation Section, whereupon he was commissioned a Captain.
By war's end, Biddle had become an ace with the rank of Major, commanding the 4th Pursuit Group of the United States Army Air Service.
