Those who take up the study of the Florida flora find it of continually increasing interest, for the flora is unique in its mingling of northern and southern species with those of the subtropics; in its epiphytic air plants and orchids; its many insectiverous plants and its endemics. It is remarkable, also, in the many different plant associations of diverse habitats -prairies, sandhills, fern grottoes, pinelands marshes, shell-mounds, and hammocks. From these many flowering plants I have selected for this edition eight hundred of the more common and the more interesting herbs, shrubs, and trees, and have tried to indicate in simple terms their more noticeable characteristics. The nomenclature follows, in general, that of the International Code.
