In 1872, Ruby, a high-class member of Boston's black elite, moves to rural Canada as a mail-order bride to escape her scandalous past. When she arrives, she is surprised to find that her intended is a white man. Benjamin, a handsome widower and dairy farmer, is looking to marry a good woman of any color who will help him tame his wild six-year-old daughter, Abigail. As time passes, Ruby settles into her new life and love blossoms between Ruby and Benjamin.
