In 1769, a Hungarian nobleman, Wolfgang von Kempelen, was summoned to witness a show at the court of Maria Theresa. So unimpressed was Kempelen by the performance that he declared he could do better himself and built The Turk: a machine capable of playing chess. This book tells the story of the machine's career.
