In the year of our Lord five hundred eighty-five, fierce Roman raids are taking place along the east and northeast coasts of England. Captured in one of these raids is Wolfstan, a young Saxon farmer; left behind are his wife Ea, and his young son Wolf. After being captured and taken to Rome to be sold as a slave, Wolfstan is purchased by a monk who will someday become Pope Gregory the First.
