It was on April 1, 1968, that Hugo Vihlen set out on one of the most unusual voyages ever made by modern man - a solo crossing of the Atlantic in a sailboat measuring a mere 5 feet, 11 7/8 inches in overall length. Imagine your bathtub with a mast and a three horsepower outboard motor on it and you've got the picture.
For 85 days Vihlen braved rough seas in his plywood and fiberglass boat. He slept on his back with his feet against the front and knees bent. An alarm sounded every hour so that he could check his heading, barometric pressure and general sailing conditions. He never sailed more than 84 miles in one day and strangely enough, never drifted more than ten miles off course.
You may well ask why a successful man with a loving wife and son should suddenly get caught up in so mad a scheme which would place his life in extreme danger. APRIL FOOL vividly retraces every exciting hour of Hugo Vihlen's historic voyage, from the moment he set sail from Casablanca to his triumphant arrival in Florida 4,480 miles and three months later.
