This essay traces the figure of the witch in Islamic and Arabic traditions through the legend of the Moroccan jinniyya Aisha Qandisha, and others, finding resonances in Shannon Chakraborty’s The Adventures of Amina al-Sirafi. By juxtaposing folkloric and historical narratives with the characters of Amina, Dalilah, and Dunya, I explore how premodern Islamic narratives simultaneously admired and was repulsed by female occult knowledge.
