Nolan McMahon dated Frank Hughs because his impression of Frank was that of kind, gentle soul. But as the years went by, Nolan realized he fell in love with a lie, only an image of Frank that turned out to be a complete mirage.

The beatings started with the small stuff. Frank would freak out when Nolan left bread crumbs in the butter. He would slap him softly across the head when Nolan talked back. But what started out as a small temper ballooned into full-on rage, and Frank’s ferocious anger left bruises across Nolan’s chest and, eventually, a cracked eye socket during one particularly heated argument.

As he always does, Frank tries to make up for his bad behavior by taking Nolan to their lake house. But this time, things feel different. There is hope in the air, and during dinner that night, a green glint by the forest’s edge catches Nolan’s eye through the window of the dining room. He tries to play it cool and not attract Frank’s attention. That night, he sees a wolf staring at him from the forest through Nolan’s bedroom window. Nolan feels a strong attraction to this black wolf, a feeling of excited familiarity that captures his gaze and won’t let go.
