Prime Minister John Macdonald moved quickly to protect his vision of a Canada from coast to coast. To do that he knew he needed a mounted police force under the authority of the Dominion government enforcing the laws of the land and preparing the way for settlement in the West. Thus was born one of Canada's most recognized symbols...the Mounted Police.
