Howard Kahane, 4/19/28-5/2/01, was born in Cleveland. He received his bachelor's in '54, his master's in '58 from UCLA, his Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania in '62. After graduating, Kahane taught at Whitman College, the University of Kansas, American University & the University of Maryland at Baltimore. He then went on to teach philosophy at Baruch College in NY. In '71 he published his most famous work, "Logic & Contemporary Rhetoric: The Use of Reason in Everyday Life," which has produced nine editions & considered a handbook for philosophy teachers. In it, he attempts to rid logic of its mathematical approach & make it a tool for assessing truthfulness. He died in Mill Valley, CA after a heart attack.
This text is designed for instructors who want a complete set of rules for first order predicate (Quantifier) logic, with identity & a good range of other material. The author's approach through all of the editions has made this text the easiest for students to learn from among modern symbolic texts.
