FORD HERMANN HUEFFER [1873-1939] was a British editor and writer of essays, novels, nonfiction, and poetry. He initially wrote under the pen name Ford Madox Hueffer. Under that name, with Joseph Conrad, he co-authored The Inheritors (1901) and Romance (1903). Later, he settled on the combination Ford Madox Ford after he wrote a biography of his grandfather, Ford Madox Brown, the fine arts painter. In 1908, he started and edited The English Review. There, he published Thomas Hardy, H. G. Wells, Joseph Conrad, Henry James, John Galsworthy, William Butler Yeats, Wyndham Lewis, D. H. Lawrence, and Norman Douglas. During WWI, he worked along with G. K. Chesterton, John Galsworthy, and Hilaire Belloc for the British War Propaganda Bureau. After World War I, he started and edited The Transatlantic Review. There, he published James Joyce, Ernest Hemingway, Gertrude Stein, Ezra Pound, and Jean Rhys. His most celebrated novels are The Good Soldier (1915) and the Parade's End tetralogy—Some Do Not... (1924), No More Parades (1925), A Man Could Stand Up (1926), and The Last Post (1928).
