President of Concordia Seminary and then the Seminary in Exile (Seminex) following a mass walkout of faculty and staff over the teaching of the Historical-Critical Method of Bible interpretation. After leaving the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod, he and others formed the Association of Evangelical Lutheran Churches (AELC), which later merged with other organizations to form the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America (ELCA), which is the largest body of Lutherans in the United States.
