English Heritage (officially the Historic Building and Monuments Commission for England) is a non-departmental public body of the British Government with a broad remit of managing the historic built environment of England. It is currently sponsored by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport.
English Heritage was set up in 1983 and exists to protect and promote England's spectacular historic environment and ensure that its past is researched and understood.
Dr Simon Thurley has been chief executive since 2002.
