Ronald J. Watkins is an American nonfiction writer, editor, and collaborator known for investigative works and historical narratives. Born in Phoenix, Arizona, he studied history and justice studies before beginning a career in public service. He worked as a probation officer and presentencing investigator for the Superior Court in Phoenix, later serving as assistant director of the Arizona Department of Insurance and the state's chief insurance fraud investigator. Watkins also held the position of chief administrative law judge. As an author, he has written several notable books, including High Crimes and Misdemeanors, an account of the impeachment of Arizona governor Evan Mecham, and Birthright, about the Shoen family and the murder of Eva Shoen. His refusal to reveal sources in connection with Birthright led to landmark federal court rulings affirming protections for nonfiction authors. Watkins has also written Evil Intentions, Against Her Will, and Unknown Seas.
