When the author was six he read 'The War of the Worlds' by H. G. Wells. That kind of thing happens in a house where there are lots of books. More than C. S. Lewis, more than J. R. R. Tolkien, more than Michael Moorcock or Mervyn Peake, H. G. Wells remains his very first inspiration, the very first to inspire him to write.

Having written a number of (unpublished) tales over the years, the 'Land of the First' series is his first serious attempt to get at least one of his stories into print. It is a single tale spread over three books, but it is part of a much greater whole. Servant of Fire (the first volume), Servant of Lies (the second volume) and Servant of Darkness (the third volume) are merely the beginning.
